Having a child with developmental disabilities presents unique challenges. For military families, these challenges often are even greater due to the nature of their situation which may include adjusting to new living environments, the absence of the military spouse, distance from family and friends support networks, and unfamiliarity with available military and local civilian resources.
The Navigator's Compass, Guam's Family Support 360 Project for Military Families aims to serve as a guide to help family members identify and access the community supports to help meet these challenges and help them maximize the potential of their child with developmental disabilities.
- Enhance the capabilities of families to assist their children with developmental disabilities to achieve their maximum potential;
- Support the increasing ability of children with disabilities to exercise greater choice and determination and to engage in leadership activities in their communities; and
- Ensure the protection of the legal and human rights of children with disabilities.
- A One-Stop Navigator's Compass office that is Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible, centrally located at the University of Guam campus in Mangilao
- A full time Senior Family Navigator who has personal experience with accessing military and local resources and whose primary responsibility is to assist families in connecting with various services.
- Partnership with the Exceptional Family member Program (EFMP), Defense Department and Public School Systems, Developmental Disabilities Council,
Guam Legal Services Corp; Disability Law Center, and others
- A consumer-driven Advisory Council
- Military family members or children who are experiencing high levels of distress who are referred by a military affiliated agency or through self referral
- Military families stationed on Guam who have recently been stationed to Guam
- Families stationed on Guam and deployed outside the permanent duty station
- Families with a TDY/TAD (Temporary Assignment of Duty) family member which leaves one primary caregiver
- Children with more significant disabilities that need access to multiple interventions from a variety of agencies and programs
